Box Office news: Superman’s James Gunn weighs in on international struggles, ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ closes in on $650m worldwide
July has been a busy month for cinema go-ers, with F1: The Movie racing onto our screens in the last few days of June, before Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali brought Jurassic World: Rebirth roaring to the fore on July 2.
But it’s James Gunn’s Superman that has made headlines due to international struggles, despite huge domestic success.
Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to talk you through it.
Superman flies into 2025’s top 10
David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have become somewhat of pop culture idols over the last few weeks, with the latest Superman reboot seeing huge domestic success in the United States.
Latest statistics tell us that its domestic box office has reached the heights of $236 million, making up nearly 60% of its overall gross, but the remaining $173 million (42.3%) is courtesy of the 28 other markets around the world, representing a lopsided box office for the new superhero flick.
Nevertheless, the worldwide gross of $409 million is a huge success overall, and it pushes the film up to ninth place in the 2025 box office rankings, surpassing the likes of Micheal B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, as well as fellow superhero picture, Thunderbolts*.
Gunn: ‘Anti-American sentiment isn’t helping us’
Director Gunn, whose filmography includes the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, has spoken about Superman’s international struggles.
He said: “Superman is not a known commodity in some places.
“He is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things.”
On a more political note, he added: “It also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us.”
Jurassic World Rebirth roars to global success
Rebirth was predicted to see an opening five-day release of $260 million, but instead smashed the $300 million mark, soaring to $322.5 million.
Since then, it hasn’t slowed down, and has broken into the top four grossing films of 2025 worldwide.
Sitting behind only Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animated fantasy movie, Lilo & Stitch, and A Minecraft Movie.
