Box office news: ‘Zootopia 2’ debuts with largest international animated launch

A recent box office stampede took charge as animated sequel Zootopia 2 reached $556 million in the first five days since its release.

The sequel also sports the biggest worldwide gross in that timeframe compared to all 2025 releases.

Film News Blitz’s RC Stacey celebrates the big news.

A groundbreaking feature

Ranking fourth in all-time global debuts behind the Avengers double-whammy - Infinity War and Endgame, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home), Zootopia 2 aims to rival the all-time box-office returns of those films.

Earning $400 million in international ticket sales, the animated sequel is benefiting from great reviews and word of mouth acclaim.

Speaking on the success, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergamn was quoted by Variety saying: “The incredible response to ‘Zootopia 2’ reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast.

“It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to start the holiday season.”

Internationally, Zootopia 2 has had the biggest opening weekend increase from original to sequel for an animated franchise (239%).

Zootopia (2016) was critically and commercially adored, grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and was so adored in China that Shanghai Disneyland built a dedicated Zootopia Land that debuted in 2023.

Furthermore, it is no surprise that China make up a record breaking $272 million of Zootopia 2’s current box-office total.

Phenomenally, this has pushed the sequel past that of the original’s cumulative box office in China ($236 million).

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 follows Ginnifer Goodwin’s Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman’s Nick Wilde as they reunite to solve another mystery in the city.
