Box office news: ‘Zootopia 2’ passes $1 billion worldwide
Disney’s animated sequel, Zootopia 2 (Zootropolis 2 for Britons), has surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
In just three weekends, the film has surpassed its predecessor and become one of the biggest hits of 2025.
Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look at the numbers.
‘Zootopia 2’ is one of the biggest films of 2025
As reported by Deadline, Zootopia 2 has now raked in a whopping $1.137 billion at the box office, with an impressive $877.7 million from markets outside North America.
Approximately $500 million of the box office action has come from China, helping Zootopia 2 rank as the second-highest-grossing film of the year, behind the Mandarin animated epic Ne Zha 2 ($1.9 billion, of which $1.86 billion came from China itself).
The success in China should be no surprise, given the 2016 original’s prowess in the region led to Zootopia Land debuting at Shanghai Disneyland in 2023.
Zootopia 2 passed the billion-dollar mark on Friday, taking just 17 days to do so, and no Hollywood animation has reached the mark in such a short time previously, nor has any PG-rated feature.
It also now ranks as the seventh-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Zootopia 2’s success has been built on an incredible five-day opening of $556 million.
That performance is the fourth-best all-time globally, and the best-ever for an animated title.
What is ‘Zootopia 2’ about?
Zootopia 2 is directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, who return from the 2016 original, with Bush also writing the screenplay.
The two leads return as well: Ginnifer Goodwin’s bunny, Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman’s fox, Nick Wilde.
Partners in the police force, Hopps and Wilde take on a new case, going undercover in Marsh Market, where they encounter Ke Huy Quan’s Gary De'Snake.
