DCU news: ‘Superman Man of Tomorrow’ coming to cinemas in 2027
Fresh from successfully launching the new DCU, James Gunn has confirmed a Superman sequel, dubbed Man of Tomorrow, will be coming to cinemas in 2027.
The unexpected announcement means three ‘Super’ films in consecutive years will help propel Gunn’s comic book hero franchise forward.
Film News Blitz co-founder Dan Lawrence unpicks the ‘Super’ announcement.
Superman will return
DC Studios co-chief Gunn took to X - formerly known as Twitter - on Wednesday to let the world know he’s full steam ahead with a follow-up to this summer’s Superman, which starred David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.
A comic book artwork of the last son of Krypton stood beside arch-nemesis Lex Luthor in his warsuit, accompanied by the following caption: ‘Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027.’
The news comes shortly after Gunn confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’d completed the treatment for the next story in what he’s dubbed The Superman Saga.
"The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today,” Gunn said in August during a premiere for the second season of Peacemaker.
Little is known of the plot for Man of Tomorrow, but from the Jim Lee artwork tease, rest assured, Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor will return to fight Corenswet’s Supes.
The ‘Superman’ story so far
Gunn kicked off his DC film franchise this July with Superman, which has grossed $612 million worldwide and received critical acclaim with an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
That score was surpassed by the audience rating on the famous aggregator, which currently stands at 90%.
The story will continue next summer, on June 26, to be precise, when Milly Alcock will fly through cinemas in director Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl.
Between Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow, Gunn’s DC franchise will take a horror-infused turn with Clayface on September 11, 2026.
Derived from the famous Batman villain’s story, Clayface will star Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie with director James Watkins (Speak No Evil) at the helm.
When Batman will make his DC shared-universe bow in a solo adventure is less clear, but we do know that Matt Reeves’ long-awaited The Batman: Part II, starring Robert Pattinson, will play in theatres from October 1, 2027.
