Doctor Who betting tips: Could Erin Doherty land Time Lord role?
Doctor Who's future is still up in the air - but Whovians were recently handed a boost as the longstanding show was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
Unfortunately, a win in the Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming category wasn’t to be for Doctor Who, losing out to comedy-drama Etoile.
But thanks to Gambling.com, the leaders in betting and casino reviews and recommendations, Film News Blitz has learned that another Emmy winner, Erin Doherty, could be in line to play the 16th Doctor.
What is happening with ‘Doctor Who’?
Ever since the second season of the revamped Doctor Who concluded in 2025 on BBC and Disney+, the show has been in limbo.
Uncertainty over whether Disney would continue supporting the series has put a third season on hold, and led to an early exit for 15th Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, who regenerated into former companion actress Billie Piper in a surprise season finale twist.
With a spin-off show, The War Between the Land and Sea, still to come, it’s believed Disney will make a decision after that season has aired.
However, while a third season of Doctor Who on Disney+ is yet to be confirmed, the BBC have reassured sci-fi super-fans that the programme is "going nowhere".
BBC's content chief Kate Phillips eased fans’ concerns at the Edinburgh TV Festival, saying: "Any Whovians out there, rest assured: Doctor Who is going nowhere.”
The sentiment is that, with or without Disney, the BBC will continue to produce its beloved sci-fi hit.
Billie Piper’s future on ‘Doctor Who’
While it was Piper, who previously played the beloved Who companion Rose, that appeared on screen post Gatwa regeneration, her future as the titular Time Lord is uncertain.
Many believe that showrunner Russell T Davies has placed Piper as a red herring while Doctor Who’s future is decided, and a more permanent replacement for Gatwa will be chosen.
With that in mind, Piper is 8/13 to retain the role moving forward.
An alternate choice to Piper is Doherty, who landed the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie prize for her role in Netflix’s Adolescence.
Following her Emmy win, Doherty is Evens to land the role of the 16th Doctor,
Other candidates include Whoopi Goldberg (7/4) and Gatwa’s Sex Education co-star Aimee Lou Wood (5/2).
If any of these names were cast, they would become just the second female star, following Jodie Whittaker, to portray the Doctor on a permanent basis.
