Film news: Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ poster tells us to “Defy the Gods”

The first poster for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey is officially out, and it certainly sets the scene.

With one of the most stacked film casts of the last decade, audiences are being made to wait for at least another year for its release, as it's set to hit the big screen on July 17, 2026.

Here to break it down is Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews.

The first poster

The striking tagline of the poster, written in blood orange, reads ‘defy the gods’, in reference to the journey that will be taken by Matt Damon’s Odysseus, as he takes his ten-year journey home from the Trojan War.

Other information we see is that, of course, the film is released in July of next year, but also that the entire movie has been filmed in IMAX, making it the first of its kind.

Accompanying the striking text is a decapitated Greek god statue’s head, with smoke and sparks rising from beneath it.

Other than some leaked images and cryptic comments, we know very little about Nolan’s project so far, so this poster stands as the first concrete piece of information we’ve seen for a while, and it all but confirms our excitement for what looks to be a total epic.

A stacked cast

The cast put together for The Odyssey is simply stupendous.

With the main four including Damon himself, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, there is a very high standard being set.

Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Fury’s Jon Bernthal are in supporting roles, joined by Oppenheimer’s Benny Safdie, and Himesh Patel, who played the lead role in Yesterday.

But that’s not all, there is also Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo, most of whom have unspecified roles as of yet.

What we do know though is that Christopher Nolan’s latest project will be a marvel to behold, and if the opportunity arises, going to see it in IMAX could be the cinematic event of the year in 2026.

Joe Matthews

Joe Matthews may be graduating in Sports Journalism, but he absolutely loves a good (or sometimes not so good) movie. From ‘are you not entertained?’ to ‘here’s Johnny!’, corny film references are his forté.
