Film News: Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona go head-to-head in raunchy ‘Splitsville’ trailer

Splitsville is a brand-new romantic comedy set to hit the big screen in August this year in the U.S.

With the cast boasting the names of Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, alongside director and actor Michael Angelo Covino, the film’s trailer release has already gained 900 thousand views on the studio NEON YouTube channel.

Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to discuss it.

Controlled chaos?

Set around the ruins of Ashley and Paul’s faltering marriage, Splitsville sees Paul run to his friends, played by Johnson and Covino, for help.

It seems as though the secret to their marriage isn’t as easy as it seems, and it seems as though what ensues can simply be defined as chaos.

Exploring the idea of an open marriage scares Kyle Marvin’s Paul, and it throws the relationships of the entire group into turmoil.

Cannes reception

Splitsville represents Covino’s return to the Cannes Film Festival, as his previous film, The Climb, saw a largely positive reaction.

It seems as though Splitsville has succeeded in the same area, being dubbed by The Hollywood Reporter’s Jordan Mintzer as a “movie (that) captivates early on with several different scenes of physical and mental mayhem”.

He also said: “The movie never gets too outlandish or silly, revealing how well Covino and Marvin can reap cinematic chaos while remaining firmly in control of their art.”

Ultimately, Splitsville thrived on the Cannes canvas in May and stood out as the best of the selection from the esteemed festival.

Dakota Johnson is redefining her career

The star of the film is 35-year-old Dakota Johnson, who has been on a career-defining curve in repairing damages from the Sony Pictures flop Madame Web.

Hailed by some as possibly the worst film of all time, the cinematic flop put Johnson alongside Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor as they had to survive the dangers ahead of them.

Since then, the actress has made the best use of her 2025 so far, as Materialists is currently in cinemas in the U.S, and is receiving a much more positive set of feedback.

Having originally caught headlines starring in an erotic adaptation of E.L.James’ romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey, which was followed by Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed, it seems as though the Texan is well-set for the main role in Splitsville.

Release information

Splitsville is first set for limited theatrical release on 22 August 2025, before seeing a wider release on 5 September in the U.S.

For U.K. audiences, a release date is yet to be confirmed.
