Film news: Daniel Day-Lewis returns from retirement, stars in his son’s film ‘Anemone’
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most iconic actors of all time.
With performances such as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, and Reynolds Woodcock in Phantom Thread, the 68-year-old amassed three Academy Awards prior to his retirement in 2017.
Nevertheless, it seems as though his son, Ronan Day-Lewis’ directorial debut Anemone is enough to coax him back into the industry, reports Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews.
Anemone set for October release
Anemone is the story of a father and son reuniting after Day-Lewis’ Ray Stoker sought a life of isolation in Northern England.
With Sean Bean portraying the son, Jem Stoker, Ronan Day-Lewis’ first film is set to explore the complexities of family relationships and traumas of generational conflict.
The Focus Features production is set to hit the big screen for mainstream audiences on October 3, 2025, but eyes will first be set upon it at the New York Film Festival in late September.
This will be alongside other highly anticipated movies such as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt.
Legendary Day-Lewis returns from eight-year hiatus
Daniel Day-Lewis’ last appearance was in 2017’s Phantom Thread, which received six nominations at the 2018 Oscars.
One of those was for Day-Lewis’ portrayal of a 1950’s London dressmaker, for Actor in a Leading Role.
In a surprise move, it was announced he was retiring from acting before Phantom Thread’s official release, shocking the entire film world in a move he himself described as a sudden impulsive feeling he had to act on.
Known for his dedicated acting methods, his performances received astounding respect, which helped establish him as one of the best in the business.
With Anemone a highly anticipated feature ahead of this autumn, audiences around the world will be watching in awe as one of the all-time greats returns to the screen.
