Film news: Disney reveals ‘The Simpsons Movie’ sequel in place of untitled Marvel flick

Disney has shocked the comic book world by revealing that the brand new Simpsons Movie sequel has replaced an untitled superhero film set for release in July 2027.

Replacing an untitled Marvel film has upset some fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who were looking forward to the packed bill of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027, joined by an unnamed project in between.

Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to talk you through it.

What do we already know?

The Simpsons is the longest-running television show on air, with 39th and 40th seasons already booked for 2028 and 2029.

When The Simpsons Movie was released in 2007, it generated a huge profit of $536 million from a $75 million budget.

Announced via an Instagram teaser, reading ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds’, Disney has yet to release much more about the film.

2007’s The Simpsons Movie saw the fictional town of Springfield trapped inside a huge dome after Homer accidentally polluted a local lake, and we can expect the same sort of antics to come.

Remarkably, it’s taken almost two decades to get a sequel greenlit for The Simpsons Movie, a product of the COVID-19 pandemic, which pre-empted a series of animated failures for Disney at the box office.

However, the incredible success of Inside Out 2 has convinced Disney to press ahead with bringing Springfield back to the big screen.

That said, showrunner Matt Selman emphasised the importance of streaming services for The Simpsons when he told Variety: “Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever.”

He added, “Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realised we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”

Most iconic show of all time

Many people would certainly class The Simpsons as being one of the world’s most iconic shows ever, accompanying the likes of Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Saturday Night Live, all of which took their casts and creators to fame.

Since it first aired in 1989, Matt Groening’s artistic animations have defined comedy television for decades.

Tallying up to 791 episodes, The Simpsons is set to become just the 12th show to hit 40 seasons of running on American TV.

Groening has, however, also worked on several other shows, namely Disenchantment, which ran from 2018 through to 2023, and of course, Futurama, which itself has been renewed for 13th and 14th seasons throughout 2026.

Set for theatrical release on July 23, 2027, The Simpsons Movie 2 is set to continue bringing the iconic TV show to life for audiences around the world.

Joe Matthews may be graduating in Sports Journalism, but he absolutely loves a good (or sometimes not so good) movie. From ‘are you not entertained?’ to ‘here’s Johnny!’, corny film references are his forté.
