Film news: Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ thriller ‘Bugonia’

Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness and The Favourite creator Yorgos Lanthimos is back in 2025 with his latest awards contender, Bugonia.

With Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons together again for another Lanthimos project, the eyes of cinema fans around the world have been glued to their screens in anticipation of their most recent film.

Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to discuss the truly special star performances.

What is ‘Bugonia’ about?

Bugonia sees Stone as an extravagant corporate CEO, named Michelle Fuller, running a biomedical company in America.

Plemons, meanwhile, stars as a reclusive conspiracy theorist living with his cousin, played by Aidan Delbis.

Teddy (Plemons) and Don (Delbis) believe that Fuller is actually an alien, orchestrating the destruction of the human race, and that the upcoming lunar eclipse provides the perfect opportunity to negotiate for their survival.

To take advantage of the rare phenomenon, during which Teddy believes the aliens can secretly make contact with their mothership, the pair decide to kidnap Stone’s character to set their survival plan in order.

What ensues is a thrilling passing of events, with Plemmons, Stone and Delbis flexing their acting muscles throughout.

Awards season awaits

With the Academy Awards and BAFTAs quietly creeping up as 2025 begins coming to a close, Bugonia seems well poised to make an impression in the nomination shortlists.

Many viewers are suggesting it may be the best performance of Stone’s career, and her main castmates Plemons and Delbis are certainly worthy of nominations also.

Delbis’ performance is especially notable as it stands as his first in a full feature film, and he is just 19 years old.

Furthermore, he self-describes as having autism, which stands to inspire others with the condition, as his performance as Don is an emotive and powerful one, which provides another layer to the complexities of this Lanthimos thriller.

Awards season is set to get going in January, with the winners being announced in February, and it could be that Bugonia makes headlines.
