Film news: Michael Caine comes out of retirement for Vin Diesel’s ‘Last Witch Hunter 2’
Michael Caine is one of the most iconic actors of all time.
Appearing in cult classics like The Italian Job and Zulu, he made his final appearance in 2023’s The Great Escaper - he then announced that he’d be stepping back from acting.
That said, Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to discuss the legend's return in Vin Diesel’s The Last Witch Hunter sequel.
Friend and mentor
Caine’s role in The Last Witch Hunter sees him portray the 36th Dolan, the trusted compatriot of Diesel’s Kaulder.
His job is to keep a record of Kaulder’s life, as well as support him, regarded as a friend and mentor to the main protagonist.
Meeting a sticky end, Dolan 36 informs Kaulder of his intention to retire, but dies in his sleep that same night, setting off a chain of events that led to The Last Witch Hunter generating a net profit of over $50 million.

A decade on
With the first film premiering in 2015, it's been 10 years of waiting for fans worldwide for the sequel.
With Caine edging towards his 93rd birthday, 2025 is the time for the Englishman to reprise his role, adding to his 200-plus list of acting credits.
Despite the original not receiving much critical acclaim, The Last Witch Hunter became a cult fan-favourite, with Diesel and Caine making up an extremely popular cast, also featuring Rose Leslie and Elijah Wood.
One of the best of his generation
Caine has featured in many of the greatest films of the last few decades.
He established himself as part of Christopher Nolan core casting staples, starring in the likes of Interstellar, Tenet, and The Dark Knight trilogy, where he reinvented the role of Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred.
His voice also became iconic in several vocal performances, such as that of The Muppets Christmas Carol, Cars 2, and 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet.
The Last Witch Hunter 2 looks set to mark the end of a fantastic career for Michael Caine, who will certainly go down in history as one of England’s greatest.
