Film news: Netflix brings Richard Osman’s pages to the screen with ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ trailer
The trailer for Richard Osman’s film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club has been released.
Richard Osman’s best-selling book The Thursday Murder Club has been so successful that Netflix has taken on a film adaptation of it.
Packed with a stellar cast, here’s Film News Blitz’s Amelie da Costa’s take on The Thursday Murder Club.
What is The Thursday Murder Club about?
The novel is about four elderly people at a residents' home coming together to solve a murder and bring justice to the retirement village.
The murder mystery book was released in 2020 and has since sold millions of copies worldwide, making it a platinum bestseller in the UK.
Osman then turned it into a book series, releasing three more stories, with another one expected to come out in September of this year.
The movie for The Thursday Murder Club is set to release on August 28 and is directed by award-winning Chris Columbus, who is known for his work in the Harry Potter franchise.
The cast also includes some big names, such as Pierce Brosnan as Ron Richie, Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best and Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif.
Teaser trailer unveiled
In anticipation of the film’s release, Netflix unveiled a trailer on Thursday to tease fans.
The trailer is only short, running for one minute and 16 seconds, but it is enough to give an insight into what is to come from this adaptation.
A bloody scene of a woman falling out of a window instantly grips fans into the excitement of the film, before the cast is introduced along with their characters, allowing fans of the novel to see the pages of the beloved book come to life.
Celia Imrie, who is known for her work in the Bridget Jones film series, also made an appearance in the trailer as Joyce Meadowcroft.
The trailer features quite a few unsettling scenes, including a rotting skeleton and a horrifying crime scene within a home, described by Joyce as “an actual murder” - as the gang of central characters begin the story having only ever tried to solve cold cases.
Further shots in the trailer show the ensemble cast trying to get to grips with the murder case.
Overall, the trailer has helped fans of the best-selling book get a visual representation of what to expect in the film adaptation.
This could quite easily be the crowd-pleasing streaming hit on Netflix’s summer release schedule.
