Film news: Rose Byrne wants sequel to Melissa McCarthy movie ‘Spy’

Spy, which came out in 2015, follows Melissa McCarthy’s character Susan Cooper as she is thrust into the world of espionage when the names of her organisation’s spies are leaked.

Directed by Paul Feig, the film gained somewhat of a cult classic status, as its all-star cast and fantastic humour caught the attention of fans around the world.

Rose Byrne, who played a key role in the hilarious drama, appearing on the red carpet in celebration of her new movie If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, spoke about her excitement at any notion of a Spy sequel, Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews reports.

‘Spy 2’ in the works?

Over the course of its 2015 release, Spy grossed an enormous $235 million worldwide, with a budget of just $65 million.

Byrne, who played the snobby arms dealer Rayna Boyanov, discussed the possibility of a sequel, even stating that she was under the impression that a second film was close to being in production.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Byrne said, “Let’s get it started. I agree. I think there was supposed to be one in the works, and it never eventuated.

“I love that film, and it’s been rediscovered more and more people have come up to me and gone ‘I really love that movie’ and it’s an absolute, like, treasure. It’s such a fun watch.”

Star-studded cast

Part of the charm of the Feig comedy was its absolutely stacked roster.

Featuring the names of the aforementioned McCarthy and Byrne, combined with Jude Law, Miranda Hart, Peter Serafinowicz and Allison Janney, it flew to popularity in 2015, becoming the 33rd highest-grossing film of the year worldwide.

It even outdid the likes of Quentin Tarantino’s epic The Hateful Eight, music biopic Straight Outta Compton and Michael B Jordan’s Creed.

Spy also features one of the funniest performances from action man Jason Statham.

It is in Spy that he gives one of the funniest monologues put to screen, as he talks about the insane things he has done since becoming a secret agent.

Some of these claims include appearing ‘convincingly’ in front of the U.S Congress as Barack Obama, jumping off a high-rise building using only a raincoat as a parachute, and swallowing enough microchips to make a computer.

Should there be a Spy 2, we can all be sure it’ll be one of the comedies of the year, and if they can retain the names of Law, Statham and McCarthy alongside the enthusiastic Byrne, it could be a real one to watch out for!

Joe Matthews

Joe Matthews may be graduating in Sports Journalism, but he absolutely loves a good (or sometimes not so good) movie. From ‘are you not entertained?’ to ‘here’s Johnny!’, corny film references are his forté.
