Spielberg returns to sci-fi with ‘Disclosure Day’
Spielberg is a master of cinema, and some of his best work has been done in the realm of science fiction.
In 1977, he crafted the masterpiece Close Encounters of the Third Kind and five years later created the ultimate family movie, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
In 2005, Spielberg’s sci-fi chops went dark with a gritty adaptation of H. G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.
Now, 20 years later, the teaser trailer of Disclosure Day shows humanity on the verge of discovering an alien race.
We see Emily Blunt’s weather report interrupted when her human vocals make way for an intruding alien tongue, Josh O’Connor uttering “People have a right to know the truth, it belongs to 7 billion people,” and fellow cast members Colin Firth and Colman Domingo appear in the mysterious teaser.
The question being posed by the trailer, as uttered by one of its characters, is “Why would [God] make such a vast universe, but save it only for us?”
Not much else is known about the plot, with a brief synopsis reading: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to ... Disclosure Day.”
Who else is in the cast of ‘Disclosure Day’?
Joining Blunt, O’Connor, Firth and Domingo in the cast of Disclosure Day are Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*) and Henry Lloyd-Hughes (The Thursday Murder Club).
Who is helping Spielberg create ‘Disclosure Day’?
Curiously, Spielberg’s last major sci-fi film was 2005’s War of the Worlds.
That film’s screenplay was written by none other than David Koepp, who also crafted words on the page for one of Spielberg’s greatest efforts, Jurassic Park.
Koepp reunites with Spielberg for Disclosure Day, with cinematography by Janusz Kaminski.
Kaminski is a long-time collaborator of Spielberg’s, having worked on the legendary director’s films since 1993’s Schindler’s List, for which he won an Oscar.
Sarah Broshar and Michael Kahn have editing duties on Disclosure Day, with production design by Adam Stockhausen.
When will ‘Disclosure Day’ be in cinemas?
Spielberg’s next film, his first since 2022’s The Fabelmans, will be released in cinemas on June 12, 2026.
Science fiction is a genre that has become a major staple in modern cinema, thanks to contemporary greats like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve.
However, Spielberg’s Disclosure Day could prove that an old master can stay on top of the game.
