Film news: What you need to know about chilling new horror ‘Weapons’
A chilling new horror film called Weapons, distributed by Warner Bros, is on its way to scare audiences on August 8 this year.
Weapons is about a class full of children going missing on the same night, mysteriously at exactly the same time, with only one child from the class remaining.
Film News Blitz’s Amelie Da Costa takes a look at the Weapons trailer, which showcases stars Julia Garner and Josh Brolin amid the most sinister of plots.
The cast and crew of ‘Weapons’
Weapons’ main stars, Garner and Brolin, are well known across the film and television landscape.
Garner is a familiar face thanks to her award-winning role in the Netflix series Ozark and is set to face off against Marvel’s first family as The Silver Surfer in this summer’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Brolin, meanwhile, is part of an acting legacy, son of James Brolin, and has a wide-ranging career from his work in The Goonies, No Country For Old Men and as the tyrannical Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The formidable acting duo are directed in Weapons by Zach Cregger, who also penned the screenplay and is known for his work on the successful 2022 horror thriller film Barbarian.
Barbarian was Cregger’s solo directorial debut and a commercial success, grossing $45.4 million worldwide from a reported budget of $4.5 million.
It was also a hit with the critics, garnering a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A unique marketing campaign
Weapons has had a unique way of marketing the film leading up to its release to put many on the edge of their seats.
One way the production has been promoting is by releasing two hours of surveillance footage, which consists mostly of children running through the night.
Warner Bros. also made an in-universe website called ‘Maybrook News’ to touch on the events happening in the town of Maybrook, where the film takes place.
Following this, on April 29 2025, Warner Bros finally released the official trailer for the film.
The trailer itself is one minute and 55 seconds long and doesn’t give too much away - however is just as chilling as the surveillance footage used in the now viral marketing campaign.
It starts and ends with the narration of a child who is believed to be the only one who didn’t go missing from the class of abductees.
Within the trailer, the child says that the children got up at 02:17 in the morning, got out of bed, and never came back.
It also has a sequence of clips and dialogue to tease a little about the film and what to expect when it is released, though still not giving anything away.

About a month ago, film buffs took to Reddit about their theories on the mysterious upcoming film.
One user wrote, “Sounds like the possessed kids will be the Weapons”, whilst another wrote “Rumoured to be about witches, looking at the cast my guess would be Amy Madigan”.
Although what has been released ahead of the film hasn’t given away too much, it still provides enough for audiences to be intrigued.
This could become the defining horror of 2025.
