Film news: ‘Wicked: For Good’ trailer teases emotional showdown for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
Wicked returned to the big screen for one night only on June 4, featuring a special preview of the new trailer for its upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good.
The epic conclusion to this two-part cinematic event is set to air in theatres from November 21 this year.
After an epic opening instalment in 2024, Film News Blitz’s Amelie da Costa takes in the first trailer for Wicked: For Good.
Building on a ‘Wicked’ success story
Wicked, based on the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name, was a smash hit.
An incredible response at the box office saw Wicked gross $755 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie adaptation of a Broadway musical ever.
Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande stole the show as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.
Moreover, director Jon M. Chu’s film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture, winning two Oscars on Hollywood’s most prestigious night of the year.
A special trailer event
Due to its popularity, Universal decided to bring Wicked back to cinemas for a special June 4 screening to launch the trailer for the hotly anticipated sequel.
The Wicked: For Good trailer was released online a few hours after the initial screening and has received a high response, hitting 2.5 million views on YouTube in under 12 hours.
The trailer is an emotional rollercoaster, reflecting on the friendship of the two Witches, Elphaba and Glinda, and the hardship they face.
Wicked was emotional enough, as the two witches grew close and developed a strong bond for one another, but ultimately they made different choices, leading them to part ways amid a glorious rendition of ‘Defying Gravity’.
Wicked: For Good is designed to show the consequences of both Glinda's and Elphaba’s choices and picks up where the first film left off, adapting the second act of the hit Broadway show.
The trailer starts with Glinda in her room, getting ready for her wedding, where she faces Elphaba for the first time since the end of the first instalment.
There are snippets of two songs from the second half of the original Broadway show, ‘No Good Deed and ‘For Good' and callbacks to the 2024 film, including Glinda echoing the line “Think of what we could do… together”, originally spoken by Elphaba in ‘Defying Gravity'.
The crossovers are confirmation to all fans of the musical that the creators have included many details in the sequel that mean a lot, like they did for the original.
There’s also a brief look at Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, although the actor playing her is a mystery, plus features of returning characters, such as Jonathan Bailey’s Prince Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard and Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible.
Wicked: For Good is expected to be more emotional than its predecessor, delving deeper into the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba and the consequences of their actions.
So get ready this November as this cinematic event comes to a thunderous conclusion.
