Film opinion: ‘Blink Twice’ and the importance of exposing exploitation amongst elite groups

With Jeffrey Epstein's island constantly in the news and the much-talked-about list associated with it, a film that sticks in the mind is Blink Twice.

Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice, is an incredibly memorable film.

Film News Blitz’s Nisha Cullen analyses the film and showcases the real-world importance of films like this.

‘Blink Twice’

Blink Twice follows a tech billionaire, Slater King (Channing Tatum), who invites a group of girls for a free holiday on an island, on which he owns property.

They are showered with lavish gifts, expertly cooked meals, and everything they could ask for. But, of course, it’s all too good to be true.

An incredibly violent film, containing sexual abuse, abuse of power, murder - it is not a film to be taken lightly.

Notably, the abuse of power, which is seen in Hollywood, such as the infamous Harvey Weinstein, and the important exposure brought to light by the Me Too movement.

I find Blink Twice to be an incredible film, message aside.

Although the message is incredibly important, Kravitz did an incredible job producing and directing this film, and I recommend it to everyone who has not had a chance to watch it yet.

Money, power, abuse

Abuse amongst the ‘elites’ and ‘rich’ in society is nothing new; however, it is only in recent years that this abuse has been brought to light.

As previously mentioned, you have Weinstein, Epstein, but also the likes of Donald Trump, Prince Andrew. Even in the music industry, the likes of Dr Luke, P. Diddy.

The island element of Blink Twice is what immediately made me, and many others, think of Epstein.

With new documents regarding his island being released currently, the film stays firmly in the forefront of my mind.

It’s incredibly important that victims of any kind of abuse get justice, and while Kravitz has stated that this film isn’t based on one or multiple events, there is some truth to what the film is about.

With violence against women and girls on the rise across the world, even the National Police Chiefs Council declared that violence against women and girls in the UK was a national emergency in July 2024.

A film like Blink Twice showcases this, and the power of girls and women supporting other girls and women perfectly.

Until something is done to prevent this, Blink Twice and films like it need to be watched.

The message they portray needs to be heard, and violence against women and girls needs to be stopped.

Overview

Over a year after its release, Blink Twice is still just as relevant as it was when it was released.

Shining light on violence against women is an incredibly important thing, and Kravitz did an outstanding job in doing so.

With people in power abusing said power, it is important to give the victims of these crimes a voice and, in doing so, help them to receive justice.
