Film opinion: The biggest cinema releases in 2026 - Part 2

Summer 2026 is set to feature legacy sequels and big franchise action.

From fashion to animation, science fiction to superheroes, there will be something for everyone.

So, Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence picks his five films to watch out for when 2026 turns sunny.

1 - ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

2006’s fashion drama The Devil Wears Prada is a bona fide cult classic, loved by many.

The clamouring for a sequel has been long-gestating, and fans of the original will have their thirst quenched this year with The Devil Wears Prada 2, which brings back the original cast of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

David Frankel returns to direct, and newcomers Sydney Sweeney and Kenneth Branagh join the fray as well.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in UK cinemas on 1 May 2026.

2 - ‘Disclosure Day’

Is Emily Blunt now in every film?

Maybe, which isn’t a bad thing given her talent, and the Briton will star in the ensemble sci-fi thriller from master director Steven Spielberg: Disclosure Day

Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth also feature in Spielberg’s first alien contact film since 2005’s War of the Worlds, and the secrecy around Disclosure Day is enough to get anyone excited.

Can Spielberg pull off another alien contact masterpiece? We will find out on 12 June 2026.

3 - ‘Toy Story 5’

Another one?!.

Yes, after Toy Story 3 beautifully wrapped up Pixar’s original animated saga, the accomplished Toy Story 4 brought audiences back to Woody, Buzz and the whole gang of beloved talking toys.

Seven years on, Pixar are bringing us a fifth film and all of the familiar favourites are back to tackle the biggest foe that toys have ever faced: screens.

The toys are in safe hands with director Andrew Stanton, who had a hand in A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, WALL.E and Finding Dory.

Toy Story 5 is in cinemas from 19 June 2026.

4 - ‘Supergirl’

James Gunn’s new DC Universe kicked off on the big screen in 2025 with Superman, and by many metrics, the film was a success, as the highest-grossing superhero film of the year, with a predominantly warm reception from critics.

This year, DC is hoping to keep the positive momentum going with Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock in the lead and director Craig Gillespie helming this space-punk adventure.

Without the cinematic history that the Man of Steel enjoys, can Supergirl take off at the box office this year?

Cinema audiences will find out on 26 June 2026.

5 - ‘The Odyssey’

This is the big one.

After Oscar success with Oppenheimer, writer/director/auteur Christopher Nolan dominated headlines in 2025 with talk of his next and possibly biggest project yet: The Odyssey.

Nolan’s take on famous Greek mythology stars Matt Damon in a glittering ensemble cast, with initial teaser trailers accompanying Jurassic World: Rebirth.

IMAX tickets started selling a year ahead of release, and a six-minute prologue ran ahead of select IMAX screenings in late 2025.

It’s needless to say that anticipation for The Odyssey is bigger than any Nolan film yet, and if it matches the hype, this could be one of the grandest classics of 21st-century cinema.

Film News Blitz will be firmly seated on 17 July 2026.
