Marvel news: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ starts filming in Glasgow as Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk boards project

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as the iconic Marvel Comics character Spider-Man started filming in Glasgow last weekend.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set for release next summer, and Holland’s Spidey is set to be joined by Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence unpacks the latest on director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ shows off brand new suit

Just under a year before Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release in cinemas, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios unveiled a first look at Holland’s new suit as the iconic web slinger.

A short 20-second clip caught fans in a frenzy across YouTube and social media, showing Holland sporting a comic-accurate Spider-Man costume that also borrows stylistic hints from his cinematic predecessors, Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire.

Amid the hype, images of Glasgow city centre transformed spread across the media as the Scottish city began playing host to the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew.

Holland was pictured filming new scenes in a redressed segment of Glasgow, with production having installed New York City set-dressing via cars, road signs and traffic signals.

The images captured buy into the narrative that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to be a street-level adventure, following Holland’s previous globetrotting, planet-hopping and multiverse-tangling outings in films previous.

The Hulk is in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Following the news that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher will star alongside Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it has now come to light that Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk is in on the fun too.

For Bernthal’s Punisher, it’s a first foray onto the big screen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Ruffalo has been a mainstay since 2012’s Avengers.

Ruffalo’s inclusion is an intriguing one, but it will help ground this new Spider-Man film within the MCU ecosystem.

After the world forgot who Peter Parker was in the climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home, will Banner see Spider-Man as a friend or foe?

Who else is in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’?

Holland, Bernthal and Ruffalo will be joined by popular Spider-Man cast members Zendaya and Jacob Batalon as MJ and Ned, respectively.

Having lost all knowledge of Spidey’s existence in the last film, how will the webslinger’s once closest allies play into this new plot?

Also joining in on the fun will be emerging superstar Sadie Sink, in an as-yet-undisclosed role, as well as Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan/Scorpion.

Scorpion is a classic Spider-Man villain from the comics, and Mando’s interpretation began eight years ago in the post-credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

From teenager to man: Holland’s journey as Spider-Man

A cast coming together from multiple corners of the MCU is just one of the exciting facets of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Another is the director, Cretton, who crafted 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a rare highlight post-Avengers: Endgame.

And while it’s sad we haven’t had a Shang-Chi follow-up, a return from the film’s director is most welcome.

Finally, Holland is the first Spidey to embark upon a fourth solo film, and Brand New Day will be his seventh appearance as the character.

That journey started when he was in his late teens, with his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War coming out just a few months before his 20th birthday.

Holland will turn 30 by the time Brand New Day is released on July 31, 2026, and a generation of cinemagoers have witnessed him grow into adulthood as one of the world’s most iconic fictional heroes.

Having started as a youthful, high-schooling Spider-Man, Brand New Day will allow audiences to see Holland’s take as an adult Peter Parker, opening up a whole new avenue of drama.
