Film news: Early 2000s in its sequel era - The Devil’s wearing Prada again
Remakes have been the story of the film industry over the last 10 to 15 years.
But are the iconic, early 2000s dramedies making a return? This time, in sequel form.
After what will be exactly two decades, the long-awaited release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 is on the horizon. Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo reports.
An unexpected, grateful return
“I just think that movie was in a different era,” Anne Hathaway said in 2022, per Variety.
“Now, everything has gone so digital and that movie centered around the concept of producing a physical thing. It’s just very different now.”
The early 2000s feature became an instant classic in the realm of romcom/dramedy.
With the feature sporting an impressive global return of $326 million, fans of the original are immensely grateful for the film’s highly unexpected, imminent return to their screens.
Prada-level nostalgia
The original feature’s plot followed Andy Sachs (Hathaway) aiming to be a successful journalist in New York City after having recently graduated.
She’s granted an incredibly taxing job at a luxury fashion magazine, Runway, as a junior assistant to the unflinching editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).
Andy initially plays second fiddle to Miranda’s primary assistant, Emily Charlton, but later grows to be a favourite of New York fashion’s elite, cutthroat editor.
Plot wise, the rift caused between Andy and Emily results in the two constantly vying for Miranda’s attention and approval.
With the subplot of Andy attempting to navigate through her private life, where her boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier) firmly disapproves of her worklife as a developing, notable figure in the world of high-end fashion.
Nigel (Stanley Tucci) acts as a close confidant to Miranda, and an outlet for Andy in her struggles to contend with the tough demands of the industry.
He is a highly respected senior fashion editor at the company.

Sequel plot details
The core plotline of The Devil Wears Prada 2 will revolve around Miranda’s navigation of the vastly changed fashion industry, the struggles Runway is facing to remain competitive, and the overall downfall of print media.
Emily has elevated to the heights of the industry, and is positioned above Miranda in some respects, with her having the capacity to assist Runway with funding, as an upper-echelon luxury executive.
Hathaway’s role as Andy is currently unclear, as she had left Runway and fashion media at the original feature’s conclusion to join a New York City newspaper.
Cast, direction and more
The original’s director David Frankel is back to steer the ship alongside the first installment’s producer Wendy Finerman.
Additionally, Aline Bros McKenna returns to craft the screenplay.
The sequel will fall under the production umbrella of 20th Century Studios and Disney.
Most significantly, the core figureheads of the first film, Hathaway, Streep, Blunt, and Tucci are all reprising to add a level of nostalgia, but also, plenty of unrivaled acting chops.
It's also been reported that industry stalwarts Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, and Kenneth Branagh are joining the cast.
The latter is set to portray Miranda’s husband.
The sequel is currently in production with plenty of vibrant, reminiscent fashion teases of Hathaway, Streep and co. around New York City doing the rounds online to build more hype and anticipation.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
