Film news: Milly Alcock takes centre stage in DC’s ‘Supergirl’ trailer

Ahead of its arrival in cinemas next summer, Warner Bros. has released the trailer for the second instalment in James Gunn’s DCU, Supergirl.

Director Craig Gillespie has crafted a cosmic adventure for lead Milly Alcock, reminiscent of the verve and vigour of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look at the new trailer.

What is ‘Supergirl’ about?

Gillespie, known for his work helming Disney’s Cruella, has crafted this super-flick from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira.

Nogueira’s is an adaptation of the beloved 2022 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book run, and this film derives its key beats from that work.

The film’s synopsis reads: "When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice."

As such, the new trailer released on Thursday sees Alcock’s Kara fight, run and burst around alien planets to the tune of Blondie’s “Call Me.”

Alcock’s “unlikely companion” is Eve Ridley’s Ruthye, the “ruthless adversary” is Matthias Schoenaerts’ Krem of the Yellow Hills.

The trailer gives us glimpses of all three of these core characters, plus Alcock’s faithful canine companion Krypto, and a brief snap of Jason Momoa as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.

Momoa is a curious casting, having moved on from his DCEU role as Aquaman, to take on a part he’s coveted for years prior to his initial superhero casting.

Kara is a different character compared to Superman

David Corenswet’s Superman debuted in 2025, a quirky, colourful film built on the hopeful nature of its dorky central character.

Alcock’s Kara, Supe’s cousin, burst in with a chaotic energy right at the film’s end, signifying she’s a very different character indeed.

At 23, Kara is finding her way in the cosmos, and Gunn and Gillespie have described her as a different type of feminine superhero.

“This is really an anti-hero story,” Gillespie said at a recent New York event, teasing the film (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life,” told the New York crowd.

Gunn added, “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all.

“Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

If anything defines Supergirl apart from Superman, it’s the line Alcock utters in the trailer in response to who her heroic cousin is.

“[He] sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”

When is ‘Supergirl’ out in cinemas?

Supergirl soars into cinemas on June 26, 2026 and here’s hoping it delivers on the frenzied promise displayed in the trailer.
