Film news: Scarlett Johansson set to join ‘The Batman Part 2’ opposite Robert Pattinson

Scarlett Johansson looks set to join Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 in an unknown role.

The Robert Pattinson-led Bat-Saga is set as a planned trilogy, with Part 2 releasing in 2027.

Film News Blitz’s RC Stacey fans the rumour flames.

Following on from the news that Johansson will be leading the Mike Flanagan-directed Exorcist film from Blumhouse, it is looking likely that the star actress will be jumping over the proverbial superhero divide, trading Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and Black Widow for an as-yet unknown role in DC’s The Batman Part 2.

As reported by Yahoo! News, the deal is in its final stages, and sources speaking to Deadline suggested that the sticking point in finalising the deal was making the shooting schedule of both the new Exorcist film and The Batman Part 2 work.

There is no official announcement yet, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill (and us here at Film News Blitz) from wondering who Johansson she might be playing.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022) saw Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne go up against Paul Dano’s Riddler, as the question-mark obsessed psychopath elaborately murdered members of Gotham City’s political and social elite.

Aided by Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon and Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle, the film went on to gross $772 million at the worldwide box office and sits at a very respectable 4.0 audience rating on Letterboxd.

Fan-favourite character Oswald Cobblepot, played by Colin Farrell, was given an HBO spin-off show in 2024. The Penguin picked up where the film left off, seeing Farrell’s Ozzy vie for control of Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Pattinson, who will be a cinema mainstay over 2026 and 2027 with turns in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three (2027), joins up with fellow cast members to begin filming his second foray behind the iconic cowl.

After a series of delays, filming is set to commence in Spring of 2026, in Leavesden Studios, UK, as revealed in a letter to Warner Bro’s Discovery’s shareholders

As with the first film, Glasgow and Liverpool will act as stand-ins for the exteriors of Gotham City.

Who could Johansson be playing in ‘The Batman Part 2’?

Conjecture time! With Oswald (and Sofia Falcone played by Cristin Milioti) now leading the criminal underworld, will Johansson be playing an opposing force?

Or, and with absolutely no basis other than knowing the film will be set in Winter, might she take a villainous role as either Mr Freeze or his tragedy-laden wife Nora?

Or perhaps a version of holiday killer Calendar Man? Given that characters from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s seminal graphic novel, The Long Halloween, are all (mostly) present in Reeves’ Batman universe, it isn’t too much of a stretch to think.

But again, that is just conjecture.

Who do you think Johansson will play?
