The video-game adaptation craze

Following in the footsteps of critically and commercially successful live-action video-game adaptations like Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minecraft, and Fallout, Sony and Nintendo have joined forces to bring the Kingdom of Hyrule to the big screen in 2027.

When the Legend of Zelda film adaptation was first announced, fans of the video game series (beginning with 1986’s The Legend of Zelda) were clamouring to discover who would don the iconic green tunic.

Nintendo, via its Nintendo Today app, have lifted the royal curtain, showcasing Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason in the iconic roles of Link and Princess Zelda, respectively.

Fans of the series will be pleased to see Zelda don her iconic bow and arrow, and Link sporting the iconic green tunic.

Best known for BBC’s The Jetty and Disney+’s Renegade Nell, Bragason brings an impressive acting range that is sure to invoke the adventurous spirit of the Hyrulean monarch.

Her co-star, Ainsworth, has found fame for roles in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Sandman.

As one of the most revered and influential gaming franchises worldwide, with over 20 titles in its nearly 40-year history, and selling over 150 million units in that time, could we be seeing the start of a successful new film franchise?

While plot details remain scarce, we know that Sony and Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda is slated to release on May 7 2027, and the film is currently in active production.

Wes Ball, director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the Maze Runner trilogy, is directing the film, while Nintendo’s Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is producing the film.

Which game do you hope gets the live-action treatment?
