Netflix news: Guillermo del Toro and Oscar Isaac discuss new ‘Frankenstein’ ahead of October release
Netflix’s Frankenstein is set to come out in select theatres on October 17, before hitting the streamer on November 7.
It is the latest in a long line of cinematic adaptations of horror icon Mary Shelley’s novel.
Director Guillermo del Toro and star Oscar Isaac have recently revealed inspirational moments behind the project, writes Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence.
Finding Frankenstein’s monster
Frankenstein stars Isaac as the titular Doctor, alongside Mia Goth as Elizabeth and Christoph Waltz as Harlander.
The role of the world-famous monster went to Jacob Elordi, who was cast after the original pick, Andrew Garfield had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Del Toro spoke about how everything came to be with his cast as “a blessing” ahead of the film’s recent premiere.
“You know I really I wrote it for Oscar and I wrote it for Mia so I knew I had the pillars,” del Toro told Entertainment Tonight.
“Christoph Waltz I wrote it for. So you know in a way I knew that everything that happens in a movie is a blessing.
“You just have to be open. Open your eyes open your ears. And the moment I saw Jacob I knew.”
How Oscar Isaac took inspiration from Prince for ‘Frankenstein’
Also at the premiere, Isaac revealed how he took inspiration from some iconic pop-culture figures to get into character while making Frankenstein.
“I watched Prince getting ready for a halftime show and the way that he would just walk around that stage,” he began.
“You know, the idea of approaching him more like an artist than a scientist was kind of a fun, rebellious idea.”
Frankenstein is the work of Oscar-winning writer/director del Toro, with Dan Laustsen acting as cinematographer.
Alexandre Desplat composed the score, and Tamara Deverell led production design.
The film has already been nominated for best film at the Toronto and Venice film festivals and Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a critics’ score of 80% based on 91 reviews.
