TV news: Trailer lands for new ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'
A new Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is fast approaching to fill the gap between now and season three of House of the Dragon.
HBO released a trailer of the upcoming series earlier this week that is set to land in January 2026.
Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look.
What is ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ about?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is another tale expanding the lore of Westeros, based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas.
The trailer is a strong indicator to audiences about what to expect from this series adaptation.
It finds Peter Claffey’s Ser Duncan the Tall, promoted to the rank of knight after burying Ser Arlan of Pennytree, for whom he was once squire.
Shortly in his new role, Ser Duncan comes across Dexter Sol Ansell’s Egg, who offers to be Squire to this novice knight if granted passage to Ashford.
The odd couple make an agreement and set out on an adventure, where banter and jokes in the trailer point towards this being a more comedic, light-hearted Game of Thrones adventure, in stark contrast to what has come before.
However, it appears conflict will come Ser Duncan’s way in the form of rival knights and one Baelor Targaryen, played by Bertie Carvel.
The action unfolds 100 years before the main Game of Thrones story.
When will ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ come out?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will release on HBO and HBO Max on January 18, 2026.
The show is co-created by Martin and showrunner Ira Parker.
And while there will certainly be elements of comedy, Parker revealed in a New York Comic Con panel, via The Hollywood Reporter, that this story will also be grounded and gritty.
“I think the biggest thing about this show — finding its place sandwiched between these two [other shows] — was just tone, tone, tone, for us,” Parker said.
“These novellas have so much hope, but they also have really brutal elements of this world that I think we’ve all come to love in Westeros, where anything can happen.
“There is a level of unpredictability that resonates with people because that’s just how your life is.
“Following Dunk on this journey — a very grounded, gritty, earthy, ground-up sort of feel, we’ve never had this perspective before of somebody who grew up in the slums of King’s Landing as an orphan who didn’t have a name, didn’t have an inheritance and didn’t have any money; doesn’t have the best training in the whole world.
“He’s just trying to make it. He’s trying to go out and do something hard that’s he’s never done before.”
