Netflix news: ‘Stranger Things’ trailer reaction - The Upside Down ventures into Hawkins
Netflix and the Duffer Brothers finally dropped the long-awaited official teaser trailer for Stranger Things season five on July 16.
Heavy on special effects, the trailer teases an intense, supernatural rollercoaster as the series barrels toward its conclusion.
Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo walks you through what to look out for in the new trailer—and what to expect from the finale based on what it reveals.
What to know about the finale plot
The Rifts are open — and the mission for our beloved protagonists is clear: find and kill Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), who remains elusive and dangerously at large.
Hawkins is under strict quarantine, with the government in a full-blown manhunt for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), leaving the town tense and in turmoil.
There’s a distinct air of dread and jeopardy in this final season — more intense than ever before.
Expect loss. Expect tears. But also expect moments of joy, relief, and hard-earned triumph.
This is the last stand. Some will fall. Some will endure. Others will become legend.
But one thing’s certain: this will be the toughest, most harrowing battle yet.
New details from the trailer
From the trailer, it's clear the Duffer Brothers are holding nothing back. The intensity Stranger Things fans know and love is fully intact — dialed up to its highest level yet.
The urgency is palpable. Our characters look battle-hardened, determined.
Demogorgons have emerged from the shadows, now storming the streets of Hawkins.
The trailer kicks off with radio static and rising decibels, launching into a chaotic montage: characters racing through town, working together to locate Vecna.
The momentum is relentless.
We get a chilling tease of Vecna near the trailer’s end — a signal that the final confrontation is approaching fast.
Max (Sadie Sink) remains in a coma following her brutal encounter with Vecna last season.
Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) sits silently and emotionally by her side, holding her hand — hoping for a miracle.
Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) mourns the loss of fan-favorite Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), whose tombstone has been defaced with “BURN IN HELL” scrawled in what looks like red paint.
A grim sign that Hawkins has grown even more volatile and hysterical than ever before.
The trailer also suggests the crew is trying to draw out Vecna using chaotic sound waves, possibly from a rock radio station — referencing the show's use of musical motifs.
Think back to Eddie’s iconic rendition of Metallica's “Master of Puppets.”
It’s a montage of chaos: flickering lights, explosions, frenzied energy. A culmination of everything the series has built up until this point.
We also get a first look at newcomer Linda Hamilton, playing Dr. Kay — whose role is said to be pivotal in how the story concludes.
But the most notable moment? Hopper (David Harbour) tells Eleven: “We need you to fight one last time.”
And after another intense montage, Vecna replies, cold and ominously: “Found you.”

Creators’ thoughts
Regarding the finale, co-creator Ross Duffer said: “We spent a full year filming this season. By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage.
“So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty insane.”
“At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film, for us and for our actors. We’ve been making this show together for almost 10 years,” Matt Duffer said.
“There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us, and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. And we hope — and believe — that passion will translate to the screen,” he continued.
The final showdown
The long-awaited return of Stranger Things arrives November 26 with four episodes.
The second part drops on Christmas Day with three more.
And finally — the series finale lands on New Year’s Eve.
This is it.
Eleven vs. Vecna.
The battle for Hawkins — and the world.
