TV news: ‘The Inbetweeners’ poised to return with original cast

One iconic British team has returned to the forefront of popular culture in the form of rock band Oasis, but now, a staple of television comedy could be coming back to our screens.

That’s thanks to a new deal being struck between distributor Banijay UK and production company Fudge Park Productions to revive The Inbetweeners.

Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look at what this could mean.

Jay, Neil, Simon and Will

The Inbetweeners, created by Fudge Park Productions founders Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, was a hilarious, raucous, and worryingly accurate depiction of sixth form college life in Britain.

The show starred Simon Bird as Will, James Buckley as Jay, Blake Harrison as Neil and Joe Thomas as Simon - a hapless quartet desperately trying to fit and be relevant.

Three series aired between 2008 and 2010 on E4, and the saga continued with two feature films in 2011 and 2014.

And that was that, until now.

‘The Inbetweeners’ will return

The new deal set between Banjay and Fudge Park "paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title", according to a statement.

What’s most exciting about this, however, is that this won’t be a reboot, as Morris and Beesly revealed that it’s "Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends)."

Jonathan Blyth, managing director of Fudge Park said: "We are thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with Banijay who share our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic comedies in British history.

“This is a wonderful moment for fans, there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow."

Furthermore, Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay UK, said, "I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects over the years and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of The Inbetweeners with them.

"They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audience old and new so I can’t wait to get going."

Over a decade has passed since The Inbetweeners was on screens big or small, and it is not yet known what form the hit comedy will return in.

However, the new deal will bring this wonderful sandbox to ”new audiences across a range of platforms including film, TV and stage".

Watch ‘The Inbetweeners’ on Channel 4

Bird, Buckley, Harrison and Thomas displayed a magical comedic chemistry that is hard to match during the original run of The Inbetweeners, with each character a work of incredible prowess.

Their careers have prospered behind and in front of the camera, as writers, actors and podcasters.

It will be fascinating to see how they return, where their characters have been since we saw them last, the journeys they’ve been on and what circumstances will bring them back together in new stories.
