Film and TV news: What to watch this August - Shows and features

We all know that getting cosy in the evening and choosing something new to watch can seem daunting, especially considering the extreme commitment of a long-running TV series.

To make that process a little easier, here are seven recommendations - four TV shows and three films.

Film News Blitz’s Evie Scroggie looks at the current and upcoming films and TV shows to help you unwind in front of your screens.

Adolescence

If you haven’t heard of this show by now, where have you been?

Adolescence has been one of the most talked about shows in 2025 - with its first episode captivating 6.45 million viewers.

The gritty series follows Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old schoolboy, arrested for the murder of his female classmate Katie Leonard after she rejected his advances towards her, publicly shaming him online.

Jack Thorne, co-writer of the show, stated: “Telling a drama that’s a why-done-it, rather than a whodunit, hopefully engages people in different questions.”

In this psychological drama’s case, the themes mainly focus on what is going on with teenage boys, and how to go about addressing the growing, toxic masculinity epidemic?

The White Lotus

The White Lotus is an Emmy-winning dramedy series, written and directed by Mike White.

The satirical show sees a collection of different guests and staff interact on lavish, affluent resorts, mixing comedy with tension and tragedy.

So far, we have seen incredible acting from notable, talented industry figures, such as Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett.

The series takes you through dazzling locations in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand.

Experiencing these eccentric characters and glamorous resorts can be viewed on NOW TV or Sky Atlantic.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Fancy a trip to the cinema? Grab your friends or family and head to your nearest to watch The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The 37th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars actors Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby.

The Fantastic Four, established heroes within their community, are struck with moral conflicts after a larger-than-life villain turns up on earth and demands the family’s newborn child.

The contextual backstory is told through a segment of vintage, news-like videography.

The film currently sits as the highest-grossing Fantastic Four film yet, spending two consecutive weekends holding the number-one spot atop the UK and Ireland box office.

The feature has hit an impressive £15.37 million UK Gross in just 11 days.

Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy

Now, if you’re an extreme rom-com lover, then this film is the one for you.

As an extreme rom-com lover myself, I’m sure the Bridget Jones movies are already a few of your favourites.

This film shows Bridget in a different light than we are used to - one as an independent woman trying to navigate her way through single motherhood after being tragically widowed by her husband and father of her children, Mark Darcy.

The feature explores two potential love interests for Bridget, although, I won’t spoil the ending.

What I will say is, the relationships shown between Bridget and her friends and family are special enough to bring viewers to tears (yes I cried – a lot).

A Minecraft Movie

Now a great one for the kids (or an adult still holding onto their love for their favourite childhood game), is A Minecraft Movie

Featuring stars such as Jack Black and Jason Momoa, this feature follows four people transported from the normal world into the blocky, imaginative Overworld.

In order to return home, the four must learn to master the Minecraft landscape and the dangerous creatures within it, with the help of Steve - a crafting expert who entered the Overworld years earlier.

The group learns how to live within the gaming world by collecting resources and creating tools in order to survive.

One big final battle determines whether the misfits will be able to make their way back home, or whether they are stuck in the Overworld forever.
